Would you take an elixir that made you perpetually young and physically immortal?
What if the price for it was your eternal soul?
Billionaire Desmond Sceller acquires such a wonder drug. But when eighty-year-old Marie Long is rejuvenated by it against her will, she quickly discovers unending beauty and youth is not the paradise it seems. Sceller, however, intends on using the elixir to entice all mankind into submitting to his tyrannical control. When Marie and her grandson Peter unearth this evil scheme, they soon discover that only an extraordinary sacrifice on their part can free humanity from Sceller’s nefarious plan.

After reading “Rain from Heaven” and “Nearer the Dawn” by A.J. Avila, I was very much anticipating her next novel. This time the emphasis is on trusting God. How can we trust God when everything seems to be going wrong?Peter Long is a young man who, despite his belief in God, has difficulty trusting him, especially when his grandmother Marie is kidnapped. Peter soon discovers that she was abducted by Desmond Sceller, a man who wields control of a drug that not only rejuvenates an individual but also makes that person physically immortal. Sceller has used the drug to give eighty-year-old Marie, a former pinup girl, her youth and beauty back. Initially she is delighted but soon discovers this is not as wonderful as she first thought. Marie and Peter also realize Sceller plans to use the drug in a tyrannical plot to obtain worldwide domination, and together they work to thwart his evil scheme.
This novel got me wondering what I would do if I were offered physical immortality and a permanent return to youth. And, what if it were forced upon me? What if it were not my own choice?
As in her other two novels, “Amaranth” kept me guessing and I found it difficult to put the book down until the end. The characters came alive for me, especially Marie. This is an author who has a knack for keeping the reader engaged in the story.
Already I am looking forward to Avila's next novel.

Amaranth edition by AJ Avila Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
The book is extremely compelling and I had a hard time putting it down. It was a fast and exciting read!
To be fair, in many parts the book seemed overtly religious which may be a deterrent to non-Christian readers. However, the moral message of this novel merits a read, whether or not you are religious.
This book gets the reader hooked immediately and keeps you hooked to the very end. It’s a story of Good vs. Evil ( and Evil is bad). The characters are believable. I especially liked the author’s creative portrayal of Satan. A great read for anyone who likes good suspense stories.
BUT as a Christian book, this one at times does lack power. Do not know if the writer tried to downplay the spiritual warfare scenes to fit a wider audience, but as a soldier of Christ, I find the warfare scenes against the evil one a bit lacking. The Name of God is used, but the Power of Jesus' Name is sorely lacking. In fact, I cannot really recall Jesus being mentioned much at all ( I might be wrong) so perhaps the writer is Jewish? Nonetheless, this is a great read.
Describing this novel in one line is hard, but if I tried to do so, I would probably call it "Michael Crichton meets Pope John Paul II".
This is a short, suspenseful story involving an enigmatic billionaire's mysterious creation - a creation that seemingly has the ability to confer immortal life on those who receive it. In this age where AI advocates such as Ray Kurzweil are seriously discussing this topic, this is not an idle fantasy. Our hero and heroine - who, of course, know that not everything is as it seems - must foil him.
However, this is not a simple adventure story or thriller. Rather, it uses the conventions of this form to explore themes such as salvation, damnation, and the resurrection of the body from a Catholic perspective. And remarkably, it does so without preaching or hammering the reader over its head with a moral every page or two.
I'm not going to spoil it for anyone who wants to enjoy the story, but suffice it to say that the suspense quotient is high on this one, and the ending is a "happy ending" in the most transcendent sense of that term.
Highly recommended.
It took about 5 hours for me to read this book total. I enjoyed it. It had an original plot, the characters were realistic and believable, and it had plenty of twists and turns through the plot to keep the reader in suspense. I would classify this as "Christian suspense fiction" and it was a tale of good vs. evil set in the modern day world with modern day technology at use and modern day temptations in play. I think this book would appeal to Christians of every denomination and also to other faiths that believe in God and the devil, or anyone just open to the idea of it that enjoys a good suspenseful novel. There is some violence but the author manages to make me feel like I can hear it but not see it, if that makes sense. There is some sexual talk but no actual sexual encounters in the book. Aside from a single incident in the plot, the book was believable - at least for a Christian- and I very much enjoyed it.
I found this book enjoyable and faith affirming. The writing is competent and it’s well edited. The story was fun, although not what I would call subtle. I would have preferred that the identity of the villain be revealed more slowly, to lend more suspense, but it works this way too.
Marie Long is an elderly woman who knows and relies on God’s grace in her daily life. She quotes scripture occasionally, but only when appropriate. Her grandson Peter is helping her move, when abruptly out of the blue she is kidnapped by unknown assailants. It’s never really clear why she was chosen, but she is subjected to a horrific experimental procedure that changes her life drastically. Her grandson goes in search of her and runs into a group of villains that think they have more power than God.
I enjoyed the portrayal of Satan as a whiny man who has temper tantrums; C.S. Lewis says the devil can’t stand to be mocked, and it works well. Marie and Peter are realistic characters who elicit our sympathy, and I found myself caring what happened to them. The ending seems a little cartoonish, with explosions, monsters, and extreme though not graphically described violence. But then again the book of Revelation could be described as extreme also, so I had better not complain.
Satan is not likely to reveal himself quite so openly any time soon, so in that aspect it was unrealistic. But as far as answers to prayer go, the book struck me as realistic. I enjoyed it and will look for more books by this author.
